OpenStack Summit Austin 2016 session voting is open!
Voting is now open for OpenStack Summit Austin sessions. Cast your vote and let your voice be heard!

The Texas state capitol, live music on 6th Street, the beautiful Hill Country, bats at sunset, delicious Texas BBQ, the OpenStack Design Summit – so many great things to choose from in Austin, Texas, come April! Voting for OpenStack Austin breakout sessions is open now through Wednesday, February 17, at midnight PT.

The Tokyo Summit brought containers and NFV to the forefront, along with new and improved features in Cinder, a theme woven throughout the Austin summit. Read on to explore SolidFire’s sessions, and make sure to click on your favorites to cast your vote!

How stuff works: Cinder replication and live migration

ABSTRACT: This is a medium to advanced session on two relatively new features in Cinder. First we will look at the new replication feature, which will be available in the Mitaka release. We will show how to configure and utilize replicated volumes in your storage catalog. We plan to have two short demos of replication configurations, one from SolidFire and one from NetApp. In the second part of the presentation we will discuss the configuration details necessary in Cinder (and OpenStack) to allow live migration of instances to work with block storage attached.

SPEAKERS: Ed Balduf, Cloud Architect (SolidFire, Now Part of NetApp); John Griffith, Principal Software Engineer (SolidFire, Now Part of NetApp); Rob Esker, Product Management & Strategy (NetApp)
Vote for it!

How stuff works: Cinder multi back-end and Cinder HA

ABSTRACT: An advanced session that will look in depth at how Cinder multi back-end and Cinder High Availability (HA) work and should be configured. There is a lot of mystery around how Cinder routes requests to its various services through RabbitMQ and how those services interact with each other to perform HA. We will also look at how the same constructs are used to implement Cinder multi-backend.

SPEAKER: John Griffith, Principal Software Engineer (SolidFire, Now Part of NetApp)

Cinder and Docker, like peanut butter and chocolate

ABSTRACT: Cinder has seen explosive growth offering over 70 back-end storage providers. Now we’re seeing the arms race begin with vendors and start-ups pitching the same sort of trend in Containers. Did you know that it’s actually pretty simple to use Cinder to provide your block storage orchestration for Docker? Many point out that containers and OpenStack can be complementary — we’ll show you one such case. This talk will introduce some of the current functionality in the Docker Volumes API as well as take a quick look at a number of the options out there.

SPEAKER: John Griffith, Principal Software Engineer (SolidFire, Now Part of NetApp)

To persist, or not to persist (container data), that is the question

ABSTRACT: Containers are fast becoming the standard unit of deployment for cloud-native applications that follow the design patterns of a “twelve-factor app.” In this session, we will start from the beginning by reviewing why/when containers might be a good fit with your OpenStack cloud strategy followed by how OpenStack Cinder can be used with containers (along with examples of when it shouldn’t be) and, finally, a review of the orchestration tools available for leveraging persistent storage provided by OpenStack Cinder with containers.

SPEAKERS: Ken Hui, Technical Evangelist; Shamail Tahir, Offering Manager (IBM Cloud);
John Griffith, Senior Software Engineer (SolidFire, Now Part of NetApp)
